Looking to buy a second home in Summit County? This can be a great investment for many, not to mention the benefits a vacation home offers to your family and friends. Below are some important things to consider before purchasing a second home in the mountains.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A SECOND HOME IN SUMMIT COUNTY
- Determine why you want to buy a second home. Is it primarily an investment or a place for family and friends? The answer to this question will help determine your budget and what type of home you buy.
- How will this home be cared for when you’re not there? We offer a variety of management programs, from our full-service Platinum management for vacation rentals to our Bronze management that simply provides peace of mind while you’re away from the home. Learn more about our management programs here.
- Consider all your options with the type of home you might purchase. Buying a stand-alone home allows for added privacy, access to greenspace and added square footage. Buying a condominium may give you access to shared amenities and standard maintenance for heating, pipes and more.
When budgeting for this purchase, take into consideration taxes, carrying costs, insurance, utilities, HOA fees, home repair and the cost of a property management company (should you choose to use one).
Rent before you buy! Trying renting in various locations and different home types, and for varying amounts of time throughout the year. See what you like and don’t like. Maybe you thought you wanted to be further out but then realize you don’t want to depend on having a car or using the resort shuttle. Maybe you thought you wanted to be close to all the action but then realize you really want peace and quiet while in the mountains. It’s important to experience these things so you know what you want.
