Summit County is a fantastic vacation destination year-round, but like most vacation spots getting around while you’re here can be tricky to figure out.
Your options for transportation vary depending on the season, and should be a part of your vacation planning. And, don’t forget, Summit Express offers our guests discounts on their shuttle services. Just refer to the email you receive after booking or contact us for more information.
Ski season offers the widest variety of transportation options. Both shuttle transports and in-resort shuttles are running frequently and on a regular schedule. Conversely, due to demand, your parking options will be limited and parking restrictions are strictly enforced.
We find that for most guests, taking advantage of an airport shuttle and using in-resort public transportation is a great choice. You’ll avoid driving in hazardous conditions and you don’t have to worry about parking at all. If your vacation rental is centrally located in one of the area resorts, then this option is even better as you can easily walk to shops, restaurants and the lifts. If your vacation rental is set off away from the center of the resort, then the in-resort shuttle can get you anywhere in the resort in just a few minutes. And in Keystone, you can even take advantage of their free on-call service. Call 970-496-4200 at least 30 minutes before you’d like to leave and the bus will pick you up and drop you off at your desired Keystone destination.
For those staying in Keystone that need to pick up keycards before heading to their vacation rental, we can even offer a step-by-step guide of how this might work:
- Schedule your Summit Express airport shuttle to drop off at our office.
- Pick up your keycards via our No-Hassle, 24/7 check-in.
- Head next door to Mountain View Sports to get your ski gear (our guests get a discount!).
- Head over to the Keystone shuttle stop located at the corner of the plaza parking lot.
- Hop on the shuttle and get off at your vacation rental!
All that said, you may have or want a car during your stay. Some guests have a car because they’re driving in from their homes, while others might want to visit more than one ski area, check out tourist attractions across the county or just want the freedom of driving somewhere immediately rather than waiting on a shuttle. If you’re driving your own car, you should take into consideration the cost of fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle. If you’re renting, then you should consider the cost of a rental car and the time needed to pick up and return the rental. In both cases, you need to determine how prepared you are to drive in difficult weather conditions.
Aside from that, the most important consideration is parking. Most vacation rentals are managed by HOAs that govern the parking for the entire complex, and most of these HOAs allow one parking space. If you have one vehicle, then you’re all set! If your party has more than one vehicle you’ll need to figure out parking for those additional vehicles. You can park additional vehicles at an overflow lot that allows overnight parking. To access these additional vehicles during your stay, you’ll need to use the in-resort shuttle or come up with a car-pooling system (e.g., drive to the overflow lot to drop off the driver of the additional vehicle, and then both of you drive back to the vacation rental to pick up others in your party). Keystone offers free overnight parking at the Keystone Lodge lot (in North Keystone off of Highway 6 across from Lakeside Village) and Breckenridge offers overnight parking for a small fee at the Satellite lot (north of the center of Breckenridge just as you enter into town). Both lots are first-come, first served.
Unfortunately, we don’t manage any parking in Summit County. We do our best to communicate all parking options as well as restrictions to help guests avoid fines and tows. If you need help figuring out parking for an upcoming stay, feel free to contact us!
SPRING, SUMMER, FALL
If you’re traveling to Summit County during the spring or fall, taking advantage of those off season lodging rates, you’ll have to take into consideration that shuttle transportation to and from the airport will be limited and at times unavailable. Summit Express has a schedule on their website detailing when they offer shared shuttles and when they offer only private charters. Additionally, in-resort shuttles also have a limited schedule, combine routes or don’t run during low seasons and summer. On the flip side, parking is more plentiful, more lots are free and some restrictions are lifted.
Another consideration to make during the spring and fall is that some businesses will close down as well. For example, most of the shops and restaurants in Keystone Resort are owned by the resort. This means they close down during “mud” season (spring and fall). The benefit of this is that the resort is really quiet and guests get a chance to live like a local, taking a ten-minute drive into the nearby towns for restaurants and other activities. But this also means, you’ll need a vehicle.
During the summer, the resort picks back up as do your transportation options. And the overflow lots don’t have as many restrictions as during the winter, but the spaces aren’t as plentiful as during the “mud” season. Please note that parking managed by HOAs have the same restrictions year-round.
However you come to Summit County, our goal is to help you have a great stay. This post is an effort to do just that. We believe informed guests are happy guests, so we try to share our knowledge of Summit County as much as we can. You can read more about resort parking for Keystone here, and Breckenridge here.
